What this tool does

Choose a photo, compose it inside your chosen board outline, and generate a pattern of straight lines. The generator looks for thread segments that approximate the light and dark structure of your image. It presents a preview so that you can decide whether the result is worth making before preparing a board.

The studio provides image downloads in PNG and SVG formats, thread instructions, and a numbered nail template. Nails are numbered clockwise from the topmost outline point; always identify nail 1 on the numbered template. Save the instructions and template from the same generated pattern so that your materials and sequence agree.

Made for the whole project

A convincing preview is only one part of a successful piece. Choosing a useful photograph, leaving enough space between nails, and following a long sequence without losing your place all matter. The practical guides cover those decisions alongside the generator.

The studio supports twelve built-in board outlines, custom single-outline SVG boards, black, white or single-colour thread, experimental colour layers (including CMYK and a palette matched to your photo) and six photo-free geometric studies. Black thread is the default; experimental colour layers support up to ten thread colours with separate tie-on instructions. It does not promise a faithful reproduction of every photo. Fine details may disappear, and a physical piece will look different depending on thread thickness, board color, and lighting. Inspect the preview and make a material sample before committing to a large project.

Your photo stays on your device

Local project saves and downloaded JSON backups can include a reduced-size photo and crop settings so you can edit the project later. Treat these files as personal photo backups. Cloud backups exclude this source photo and preserve the generated pattern and progress only.

Photo processing happens in your browser. The generator does not send the selected photo to an image-processing server. The local studio needs no account. Optional accounts, free cloud backup and the community gallery use Supabase; you can sign in with Google. The home, guide and technique pages carry ads from Google AdSense; the studio has no analytics scripts. Details about the application and the separate role of website hosting are explained in the privacy notice.

A site being rebuilt with care

This is a rebuilt version of StringArtGen, with an emphasis on an understandable workflow and useful instructions. StringArtGen is an independent project. The contact page shows how to reach us and the details that make a bug report useful.

Start with an image you have permission to use, take time to compare the preview, and let the first small project teach you what your materials can do.
